TIMBER INDUSTRY PESTICIDE WORKING GROUP INVITATION


TIPWG invites you a presentation by Dr. Brenda Baillie of Scion, New Zealand on the Environmental fate of herbicides and copper in New Zealand's planted forests.

Dr Brenda Baillie is a freshwater scientist based at Scion (NZ Forest Research Institute Ltd.) in Rotorua, New Zealand. Her research work includes the water quality and ecology of streams and riparian areas, the effects of planted forest management practices such as harvesting and pesticide use on freshwater environments, impacts of extreme weather events on riparian and stream ecosystems, and freshwater ecosystem services. For a number of years, she was a member of the Scion Forest Stewardship Council audit team. She has sat on a number of expert panels, including the development of standards for the Draft National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry and the review of NZ National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management and is currently a member of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO) Forests Soil and Water Interactions taskforce. Brenda has provided advice and workshops for a wide range of stakeholders and has published and presented at national and international conferences, in scientific journals, and technical and client reports.

Noxolo Ndlovu, a TIPWG - NMU student, under the supervision of Dr. Brenda Bailie, will then present her research proposal "Towards understanding the environmental fate (soil / water) of pesticides used operationally within South African commercial plantations."
